Northstar Amber Purple Family
The Amber Purple family represents a captivating and diverse set of borosilicate glass colors, originally pioneered by Suellen Fowler. Known for their striking visual effects and adaptability, these colors have become a staple in the world of glass art.
Northstar Glassworks and the Amber Purple Family
Northstar Glassworks offers a range of shades within the Amber Purple family, each designed to cater to different artistic applications and striking characteristics. The shades include:
- NS-013 Amber Purple and NS-48 Light Blue Amber Purple - Ideal for thick blown glass and sculptural work
- NS-026 Double Amber Purple, NS-049 Dark Blue Amber Purple, and NS-069 Green Amber Purple - Highly versatile, suitable for both sculptural pieces and thinner applications
Achieving the Perfect Purple Strike
To bring out the desired purple strike, use a sharp oxidizing flame, and avoid reducing flames. During the initial heating process, a metallic haze will develop on the glass surface, which must be heated off aggressively. Once the initial haze has been removed, it will reappear but can be more easily burned off.
Striking Methods
Two methods can be employed for striking Amber Purple glass colors: flame striking and kiln striking.
Flame Striking
This method allows for greater control over color gradients. To flame strike, let the piece cool for 20 seconds until the heat glow disappears, then bathe it in a soft neutral flame until the surface barely glows. Repeating this process enables precise control over the hue.
Kiln Striking
Kiln striking provides a uniform color throughout the entire work. To kiln strike, place the haze-free Amber Purple piece in a kiln at 1125-1150°F for approximately 60 minutes, or until the desired color intensity is reached. Monitor thinner pieces carefully to prevent slumping at these temperatures.
